Physical Education

Mr Orme - Curriculum Leader Physical Education

Park High has a fantastic Physical Education department which plays a large role in the life of the school.  It is a fantastic department full of teachers with a passion for sport and physical activity and want to share that passion with you.

We cover a range of activities in our Core PE lessons and the most important thing when it comes to Physical Education is for pupils to be the best they can be, making the most of their ability.

We also have a thriving extra-curricular programme with activities just aimed at participation in sport and physical activity as well as fixtures throughout Pendle and Lancashire.

Sport and physical activity is a fantastic way to build relationships, confidence and resilience, and we invite everyone to fully participate in what the Physical Education department has to offer.

At Park High School our intent is to:

  • Promote a love of sport and physical activity leading to lifelong participation.  The faculty should have ‘high and equal expectations’ of all pupils.
  • Encourage pupils to live healthy, active lives.
  • Offer a breadth of sports to experience to facilitate the passion for sport and physical activity – everyone can find something they enjoy. The curriculum must be ‘broad and balanced’ and should provide a wide range of activities.
  • Develop skills and competencies in a number of different areas (e.g. use of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents, analysing performance, taking part in competitive sports).
  • Use assessment as a means of informing everyone how they can develop further.
  • Promote the wider reading of pupils through the use of Teams identifying relevant articles for pupils.

The curriculum throughout the faculty contributes to the personal development of pupils character – Resilience, confidence, independence, teamwork, evaluation.

Core Physical Education

Key Stage 3

Pupils are provided with the opportunity to participate in a range of sports and physical activity throughout each year group.  Each activity has 6-8 hours of teaching time and is supported, where possible, by an extra curricular club.  At KS3 pupils will be involved in:

Developing, selecting and using skills effectively in a widening range of contexts.

• Developing their ability to plan and implement rules, strategies, compositional ideas as individuals, pairs, group and team activities.

• Developing the ability to evaluate and improve both their own and others performance.

• Using imagination to solve problems and overcome challenges.

• Understanding that physical activity contributes to a healthy functioning body and mind.

Key Stage 4

Classes get the chance to design their own core PE curriculum by choosing from a range of activities.  Through providing positive experiences for all pupils we aim to create a passion for participation which will see pupils maintain a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. Activities include.

Football

Badminton

Bench ball

Hockey

Netball

Dance

Basketball

Rugby

Gymnastics

Trampolining

How to help:

All children should be encouraged to take an active part in maintaining their health and fitness.

Encourage your child to come with the necessary PE kit for every lesson.

If occasionally, it is necessary for your child to be excused from practical, they will still require kit, as they will be encouraged to be involved in another capacity, such as officiating.

Encourage your child to be involved in some of the many extra-curricular activities which the PE Department arranges.

Key Stage 4 Examination Subjects

The curriculum provides options which cater for the differing needs of our pupils in terms of both their learning and the way they complete examination courses. The options available provide pupils with a foundation of knowledge and a pathway to go on to further learning and achievement.  The vocational nature of the courses allows pupils the opportunity to experience working in a real environment, particularly in Child Development.   The curriculum is constructed and delivered using assessment as a means of informing pupils and teachers how they can develop further.

Health and Fitness

At Park High School pupils follow the NCFE VCERT Health and Fitness examination course.  The course provides students with the knowledge, skills and understanding which are essential in the health and fitness sector.    Students will have the opportunity to use these skills in a practical setting allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of working in a Health and Fitness environment. It aims to:

  • develop their creativity and decision-making skills enabling them to plan effectively for performances and to respond to changing situations.
  • prepare students to make informed decisions about further learning opportunities and career choices.
  • enable students to develop their ability to engage independently and successfully in different types of physical activity, and to develop and maintain their involvement in physical activity as part of a healthy, active lifestyle.
